"This festival was
founded partly because
Mr. Blier and Mr. Barrett
feared for the heritage
of the song recital.
They have succeeded
beyond all expectations

because they know
how to program familiar
repertory in contexts that
make us hear it freshly"
—The New York Times

Elizabeth Ellis Hurwitt

Executive Director Elizabeth Ellis Hurwitt joined NYFOS in November of 2000 after four seasons as Executive Director of the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival.

Under her directorship, NYFOS took on its first fully professional administrative staff and offices, conducted its first strategic plan, and doubled its operating budget. Ms. Hurwitt has been instrumental in establishing NYFOS professional training residencies with The Juilliard School and Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. With NYFOS Managing Director, Charles McKay, Ms. Hurwitt secured a $100,000 grant from The New York State Music Fund to commission, premiere and record Bastianello/Lucrezia, a double-bill of comic operas by William Bolcom, John Musto and Mark Campbell, released on Bridge Records in November of 2010. She is Executive Co-Producer of that release, and of NYFOS's Spanish Love Songs CD featuring Joseph Kaiser with the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, pianists (also on Bridge). Ms. Hurwitt initiated NYFOS's radio partnership with WFMT, NYFOS's first nationally/internationally syndicated radio series on WFMT Radio, hosted by Frederica von Stade.
